Cliche

July 23, 2015 By mbrooks

togetherTime plus pleasure grants me this golden opportunity to sit here and scribe you this letter.  I’ve heard that saying along time ago and seen it used by many.  It’s cliche, but I don’t want our fight for justice to become that at all.  I don’t want time being a healer to have a negative effect on our struggles.  I mean that, as time goes by the wound seals up.

I don’t want our minds to do that allowing us to move on forgetting what is and what is not.   We are staying in your face.  We do need time to ourselves to reflect and allow our minds to expand in intuitive knowledge, those aha moments.  We all need that to bring the creative flair to the arena for justice.  We all have a lot on our plates we must tend to and digest.

Don’t allow the lobbying for change in the criminal justice system to go unanswered.  We hold our kids accountable.  We hold ourselves accountable.  We hold our loved ones and friends accountable, so what about those that make regulations and laws that can affect-effect us????  If a law is unjust its accountability is hampered and dysfunctional.

Who becomes accountable for the unaccountable in that situation????  As it stands, roughly 3,000 men and women, your peers who have fallen from grace but grace is redeemable.  Truth said, it’s you, me and everyone else that has a voice.  Let us hear that voice in this shared struggle.  You may not think that it don’t affect you.

If you’ve just read that and I got your attention, your affected.  If you turn up your nose concerning that your still affected.  The issue won’t go away and you’ll see it again, hear it again and feel it again.  One thing about Truth, it don’t need any witnesses, however, it repeats itself over and over again until your attention is gotten.

It may not be today.  It may have not been yesterday, but one day sooner than later, Truth will grow deeper and deeper inside you until  you recognize it.  Something could have happened a week or two ago, or a year that went unawares to you, as you may think.  But, one day a simple act brings that episode back in your mind full swing that you can’t shake nor understand the meaning of its presence so forcefully.

The cold-shoulder we give to things a cold reality it appears in our faces.    We ask that you recognize it NOW, for NOW is today, yesterday and tomorrow combined.  Let your presence be felt along with us.

“THE HAND OF GOD”

July 22, 2015 By mbrooks

WRITTEN BY: REGINALD WOODS

“THE HAND OF GOD”
savethisnationSAFE Justice Act of 2015 Recently the  former President Bill Clinton spoke before the National Chapter of the NAACP as a follow-up to President Obama’s appearance before the NAACP last week….just these two back to back appearances would be groundbreaking enough in itself just for the mere presence of these two great leaders, however despite President Obama’s passionate and thunderous speech calling for criminal justice reform….today’s open admission by President Bill Clinton truly demonstrates that this movement calling for criminal justice reform is “THE HAND OF GOD” at work, because President Clinton admitted that “the worst mistake that he ever made in Office as the President of the United States” was signing most of these mandatory minimum laws into effect in 1994.

No one likes to admit when they are wrong, but President Clinton was brave enough to do it! It is true that GOD can turn the hearts of men like the rivers of waters, GOD said “The King’s Heart is in My hand!”     This only strengthens the call for “Criminal Justice Reform” in Washington D.C., this week has been a very powerful starting point for this movement, but now it is up to US to finish the job.

WE THE PEOPLE…..MUST SPEAK UP AND LIFT OUR VOICES!  WE MUST LIFT OUR LETTERS!   WE MUST LIFT OUR PHONE CALLS TO WASHINGTON!  WE MUST LIFT OUR PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING TO GOD FOR ALL THAT HE HAS DONE!

BECAUSE THE TIME HAS COME….AND NOW GOD IS TELLING AMERICA’S JUSTICE SYSTEM TO “LET MY PEOPLE GO!”

“MISSING IN ACTION?”

July 21, 2015 By mbrooks

WRITTEN BY : MR. REGINALD WOODS

“MISSING IN ACTION?”

MIAAll last week while the Current President of the United States as well as the Former President of the United States were both making history (in Philadelphia, PA) with their most recent efforts of making this week the official “kick-off” week of calling for Federal Criminal Justice Reforms, unfortunately our “CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS” as well as the “CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS” have both been “MISSING IN ACTION!”

*ATTENTION*: TO ALL WHO HAVE A LOVED ONE OR FRIEND IN FEDERAL PRISON,

“IT IS UP TO YOU NOW…..”

TO START CALLING THESE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS “INTO ACTION” AND CALLING THEM OUT ON THEIR ABSENCE FROM THIS FIGHT!

WE NEED THEIR SUPPORT TO SPEED UP THIS PROCESS, SO LET’S GET TO WORK ON THESE “REPRESENTATIVES!”

IF THEY REPRESENT “US” THEN THEY NEED OUR GUIDANCE AS THEIR EMPLOYERS……LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU ARE CALLING, OR WRITING THEM IN SUPPORT OF THE “SAFE JUSTICE ACT OF 2015!”

Not only are these Representatives “missing in action,” but so too are many of our most beloved and respected political activists “missing in action!”   Please, call them out and urge them to get on board with the President and the rest of the Congress and let’s get this “BILL” up for a vote in the House of Representatives as soon as possible.

*Please…remember to use “twitter,””Facebook,””YouTube” and “emails” to bring the nation’s attention to the “Safe Justice Act of 2015!”

and/or have them go to this website enter their zip and contact information, and a letter will be sent to their representative.

Thank You in advance for Your Efforts!

That Does Not Concern Me…

July 21, 2015 By mbrooks

quote-Malcolm-X-if-you-dont-stand-for-something-you-25350That has nothing to do with me or my family so why should I expend time or energy on it Why should I speak up for that, it surely is not my business? I don’t believe in politics, they are gonna do what they wanna do anyhow.

I have no desire to invite attention to my front porch, thank you, but no thanks! Unless it directly affects my household, I keep a low profile… How many times have statements of that nature had intercourse upon your tongue??

We have a tendency to choose our battles rather selectively, just as we’d much prefer to choose our life mate, rather selectively, isn’t that correct? Then with a decisive air of what we can only consider to be dignified self-importance we congratulate ourselves on some seemingly grand discover of our choice which we deem undisputable with total merit. Then we wrap it all up and call them “Values”.

Allow me to play “The Evil Advocate” for just a moment. I just want to flip the coin & expose the other side, regardless of how you look at it – it’s still the same coin 🙂 What happens when those presumed battles choose you? What about that “selected” mate turns out to have serious issues that you didn’t foresee and now is causing you all kinds of blues? If you don’t objectively view the events in and surrounding your life everyday, how do you acquire the hindsight to know whether or not they will effect you?

For every effect, there is a cause. Perhaps you say if you are not the one that “caused” it then it could not possibly effect you? I’ve been told that either you are a part of the problem or part of the solution. Just like that & I came to clearly see something that I had turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to for far too long; “NO MAN IS AN ISLAND” No matter your perception of being alone or lonely, it does not negate the historical fact that you are NEVER ALONE. You can either play in the game or be played by the game.

Either way you are a participant, willingly or unwillingly. May as well choose the side you intend to play on and thoroughly understand the role you are designated to play & enjoy! There is no I in team. Together Everyone Achieves More. The team is only as strong as the weakest link. We are all a part of ONE body. I need you & you need me, whether you choose to see it that way or not. Instead of being my sisters keeper, I Am my sister! Love is the collagen that holds the whole Universe together!

There are many events that take place in life & calls for our attention. How we respond or even if we respond usually depend upon our perception of the event that is transpiring. This is where we judge the “cause” that we will pledge our energy to. We puff up on our opinions of what we consider to be a “JUST” enough cause that is worth the effort to join. The error in that is that our opinions tend to contract our awareness & limit the scope of our ability to see the entire picture & therefore we can only see parts of the whole.

This, my friends, is DANGEROUS. We will hold on to that piece of the puzzle and can’t see past it! Thinking the whole time that what we see is all there is and according to that piece that your focus has become ONE with it really doesn’t effect you in the least so thereby, no need for concern, right? An analogy is on order here, let me dial up an image for you, I Am quite fond of the imagination, it’s an extremely powerful tool.

You are sitting in a HUGE boat with another person on the opposite end and you are out in the middle of the sea. The other person – that you have no known affiliations to – discovers a slow leak under their seat and grab a bucket and frantically starts to scoop the water that is coming in and dump it back overboard as fast as possible.

You watch the situation with detachment because it appears that she/he has it under total control and Whew! you say a prayer and thank God because it could of been under your seat, you even ask for her strength not to fail as she work them buckets of water… but it’s not your concern right? LOL… Now that i have your attention, I’m sure you realized that you were, in fact, in that boat???

It’s a fact that the rate of incarceration affects every household in America! The billions of dollars spend on warehousing inmates every year deducts what could be used for the growth of the economy. Millions go homeless & hungry everyday right here on our soil, yet your tax dollars are being spent to build bigger prison & keep people incarcerated unjustly.

The probability of you being arrested & going to jail by years end has increased in the last 5 years by approximately 45%. Are you even certain of what constitutes a federal crime? 20,000 new federal crimes has been added to the books over the past 20 years. At the rate of incarceration that the country is experiencing today, if nothing is done to curtail it, by the year 2025 one in every 2 households will have either been in prison or on probation. That’s a 50% increase from the one in every 4 households as of a recent report.

An attorney at one of the many law firms that was enlisted to assist in the 2014 clemency project when asked what’s taking so long to push those petitions through to the White House, was quoted as saying, “We know how to lock ’em up, but we haven’t been trained how to let ’em out”. My dear friends, this is not what anyone can possibly deem as being a moral practice?? Or perhaps these past 20 years I’ve been in prison has shielded me from what has become a “new way of life” out there?

I know you are all familiar with the new & bold move President Obama made in visiting the Federal prison in El Reno earlier last week? It’s those ground breaking steps that is needed to erect monuments for wholistic change! He can’t turn a blind eye to the conditions that were witnessed. Could that be why no other “sitting” president has took the grand stand and put themselves in that position to exact that type of responsibility upon themselves??

I urge you to go visit or write your local Congressman & Senators & voice your concerns about 924(c) stacking provisions & disproportionate sentencing disparities. We are all affected by injustice. Embrace the responsibility & demand a change for us & the future generations that we are either paving or destroying the way for. The choice is ultimately ours!

I humbly thank you for your time & ear in this most intimate fight for justice!!! Last time I spoke about “intentions” and it might of been implied that I was charged with carjacking resulting in death, when it is actually “conspiracy to commit carjacking”…

I want to make sure I clear that up for you and remain transparent…

Resiliency

July 19, 2015 By mbrooks

Maurice BrooksI’ve had brushes with evasive moment’s of hope.   Yet, I’ve remained resilient. Needless to say, no hope have I had that has given me the satisfaction of renewal than now. With the Commander-in-Chief’s visit to FCI-EL Reno based on the purpose for the necessity of fairness and true justice within the American Justice system I feel overwhelmed at the shot of a second chance which is deserving. Not only of myself, but others as well.

This system has been broken for sometime.
Recently, with the bi-partisan support of Bill HR 2944, Safe, Accountable, Fair,Effective(SAFE) Justice Reinvestment Act, introduced by Reps. Bobby Scott (D-Va) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), we move one step closer to the reality of a second chance.

If you haven’t rec’d a copy of the actual Bill HR2944. Have one of your loved ones or friends copy it and send it to you so that you can read the thing’s in it that pertain to you yourself.

In regards to Section 924(c) of title 18 United States Code, it is amended to—

(1)in paragraph (1)(c), by striking,”In the case of a second or subsequent conviction under this subsection” and inserting”If a person is convicted under this subsection after a prior conviction has become final.”

This portion of the Bill will resolve the technicality that has lead to the unlawfulness of the 924(c) stacking penalties. In other words, multiple counts of 924(c) charges in the same indictment would no longer lead to stacked sentence’s like the 226 year sentence Maurice NaVaro Brooks rec’d as a first time prison sentence in 1996.

Incentive Reductio Programing, can be found on pages 67-71 of Bill HR 2944. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the opportunities of earning good time through being assertive by enrolling into and completing BOP offered programs.

Also, of the first wave of Commutation’s granted by President Obama, 4 were convicted of possession of a firearm during and in relation to their crime:

Dunning Wells, Fort Myers, Fl.

Kimberly A. Westmoreland, Columbus, Oh

Robert Joe Young, Joppa, Al.

and, James Marion Stockton, Martinsville, Va.

So, I say this to say that, regardless if you were convicted of a 924(c) firearms conviction, you should still file for a commutation of sentence under the Clemency Project Act. This gives hope that the HR 2944 will be passed once it touches the President’s desk, correcting the inhumane stacking policy of 924(C) that’s neglected individual’s of a second chance to get it right with their families and their communities.

New Bill Introduced For Prison Reform

July 3, 2015 By mbrooks

change924cBy year’s end, President Barack Obama could sign into law major criminal justice reforms — passed because of the leadership and full engagement of the congressional GOP.

On Thursday, key leaders took a major step toward that outcome as Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wisconsin, and Bobby Scott, D-Virginia, introduced the Safe, Accountable, Fair, and Effective (SAFE) Justice Act of 2015, a comprehensive criminal justice reform bill that will start chipping away at our unjust, unaffordable system of mass incarceration.

Over the past 40 years, the United States has fought the drug war in the worst way possible — by jailing those who simply needed help with their addiction or mental illness. Meanwhile, we have targeted and disproportionately sentenced black and brown Americans, as well as those from poorer neighborhoods. And we have created a system that costs too much, imprisons too many, and does too little to truly keep us safe.  Read the Entire Bill Here SAFE Justice Act of 2015.

America’s Addiction to Racism

June 23, 2015 By mbrooks

“AMERICA’S ADDICTION TO RACISM”

change924c.charlestonchurchshooting400
The very tragic and horrific “massacre” at the “Prayer Meeting/Bible Study Service” at the Mother Emanuel (AME) Church in Charleston, South Carolina is without any shadow of a doubt one the most heinous and despicable crimes that one could ever envision or imagine in this lifetime, but the motivation for the horrendous atrocity is not.

That motivation was instilled in the young (21) year old shooter by someone who had a very powerful influence in his life basically “infecting” him with the disease of racism. This young man was not born a racist. He was raised to be a racist, but if America is ever to truly cure itself of this epidemic of racism, America must look for a systemic solution to a systemic problem of racism in America.

*We can not “repair” a leak on a sinking Ocean-liner with a “band-aid.” *

Rev. Joseph Lowery was once quoted with saying that “The American Criminal Justice System is the Final Frontier of the Modern Civil Rights Movement.” Again the good Reverend was absolutely right!

Every time one of these tragedies unfolds all you hear are cries for more stiffer legislation on “gun control,” however when you examine the entirety of the circumstances you will begin to see one of the major flaws of the present “lock’em up and throw away the key mentality” and that is “MENTAL HEALTH.”

Mental health is being completely ignored in America, let’s look at the data… in 1970 America had almost 600,000+  people receiving treatment for their mental illness, today there is only around 65,000 or so mental health patients who are being held under the care and supervision of mental health care professionals inside of America’s almost none existent Mental Health Hospital Systems.

(And please… by all means take one guess… where all of these missing mental health patients are…..that’s right!…..prison, county jails and city jails…and not being treated for their illnesses and to be someday released back into society at large.)

Further, there are no proposed “gun control laws” that could have prevented this crime, but perhaps a little mental health intervention could have possibly prevented this young man from becoming a cold-blooded killer. Racism is an illness much like “cancer” you must remove it all or it will return stronger than ever!

And it is with the greatest of respect that I have raised these facts, because twice before these killings inside of the “House of GOD” this particular young man was “locked up” due to erratic behavior, SO IT WAS NOT THE GUN, but the mentally ill young man holding the gun who did the damage, and one of the biggest reasons why we keep getting “side-tracked” in our efforts to CURE America’s racism with its application of the 924C stacking penalty is the moral outrage that “tragedies” such as this horrendous Church Shooting can conjure up in the masses of America’ citizenry.

Again, without the facts it appears that a “band-aid’ solution will keep America afloat, but the truth is until we get past this “sensitive” nature of being scared to tell the truth about our issues with RACE….these types of events (such as this horrific shooting)… and other tragedies such as with the criminal justice system’s (discriminatory) targeting of over 90% minorities with the “924C stacking penalty” will continue occur with absolute impunity.
Thank You For Your Time

*PLEASE HELP BRING THE FEDERAL PRACTICE OF 924C (GUN-STACKING) TO AN END, BY CALLING YOUR FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVE OR SENATOR AND EXPRESSING YOUR SUPPORT FOR THIS REFORM!
We cannot stop “pushing for change” even in the most troubling times like these. We must remain committed and strong, and most of all… We must remain in Prayer.

Father’s Day Wish

June 22, 2015 By mbrooks

athers-day-wallpaperWRITTEN BY :  REGINALD WOODS

   “MY FATHER’S DAY WISH”
(What I really want to receive on Father’s Day.)

My Father’s Day wish is very simple, I want to see everyone who is sick and tired of seeing people locked up for no good law enforcement reason for many decades longer than is necessary!(come together!) I want to see everyone who is tired of seeing people gunned down in the streets both by the police, but even their own community members. (come together!)

I want see everyone who is tired of these FAKE “microwave” Activists who show up in an area once all of the cameras are on and they are ready to give their fiery speeches and sing “We Shall Overcome,” but the very moment that the cameras are gone, so are these so-called activists and leaders no where to be found, but yet the very same suffering that they were there to protest against still haunts the lives of the communities of these people who end  up being abandoned and left to resolve their painful day to day existence. (please come together!)

WHAT I WANT FOR “FATHER’S DAY” IS TO SEE ALL OF AMERICA’S “OPPRESSED” PEOPLES GET TOGETHER AND PUT ASIDE OUR DIFFERENCES AND HAVE AN “OLD FASHIONED” MARCH ON WASHINGTON, D.C. !

I WANT TO SEE EVERYONE BLACK, WHITE, HISPANIC, ASIAN, NATIVE AMERICANS AND ALL OTHER AMERICANS COME TOGETHER AND LET’S BRING “INJUSTICE” TO ITS KNEES!  I LOVE THE LORD GOD WITH ALL OF MY HEART AND SOUL, BUT JUST SINGING “WE SHALL OVERCOME” IS NOT ENOUGH!

So it is with that thought in mind, that I leave you with words of Frederick Douglas.

“True power concedes nothing without a demand.”

SO, ON THIS FATHER’S DAY LET US DECIDE TOGETHER AS A NATION THAT THE TIME HAS COME FOR US NOT TO ASK FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM, BUT TO “DEMAND” COMPREHENSIVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM ON ALL FRONTS AND ISSUES OF LAW, SO THAT OUR SYSTEM OF JUSTICE CAN BE IN HARMONY WITH THE PRINCIPLES OF COMMON SENSE AND MORAL DECENCY!   PLEASE, HELP US END THE DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES IN THE APPLICATION OF THE 924C STACKING PROVISION! Life in Prison

May 21, 2015 By mbrooks

growing up in prison www.change924c.com

Life in Prison

When I was convicted and handed over to the United States Marshall’s I felt a dark cloud set in over my head.

I couldn’t believe that I had been given 226 years as a first time prison sentence for a crime that was based on loyalty. And what hurt me the most behind all of this was when I was sentenced my Mother asked if she could hug me before they lead me away.

And they said “NO”.

I’ll never forget that look on my mother’s face. So here I was, a twenty-two year old who had spent the last two years of his life in lockdown units preparing for trial, found convicted, and about to be shipped off to God knows where. I’d be lying if I said that the thought just didn’t frighten me, but more than that, it irritated me. I had been loyal to the only people that ever known. And this was the thanks I got.

I thought about my daughter. I thought about her so much that it hurt. I had to shake a lot of emotions and prepare my mind for this blind fight that lay ahead.

Was I built for it? I Was definitely about to find out.

First I was drove to the air field in Lexington, Kentucky, to board Con-Air. The same Con-Air from the Nicholas Cage movie.  When I got there a bus had just pulled up with a bunch of female prisoner’s on it. Already there were was a group of guy’s with prison tattoos, braided hair, knife scares, you name it, they were boarding the bus looking back over their shoulders stealing glance’s from the female’s who had just arrived on the prison bus.

I was by myself in the back of the Marshall’s car waiting to be lead on the plane once the ones already there before me were secured. Once the guys were placed on the bus and fastened tight in feet chains chained to the floor, they let the girls off the bus.

Then it was my turn.

They were made to stand in a straight line while they prepared me to board. I was the smallest prisoner out of everyone. Including the females. When they lead me by the women prisoner’s I receieved cat calls!!! The women were like,”awwww, look at that Baby”,”Baby my a@#.”,”Shorty you wanna be with me”.

I got it all!

I was so little that the feds didn’t even sit me with the men convict’s. They had me seated the first  row behind of the women because I looked like I was 12 year’s old and that I couldn’t handle myself. It was a hell of a transition for me it seemed.

The plane ride took us to the hold-over in Oklahoma. I stayed there for two weeks. When I first arrived there I remember this nice white woman directing the guards to pull me out of line. She had them take me to her office. There she asked my age and how much time I had. I told her I had recently turned 22. And that I was given 226 years. She was thinking I meant to say 226 month’s. But when I told her that I received 2,722 month’s she went and pulled my file and shook her head in disbelief at what she had found.

The first thing she did was call one of the other officer’s into the room to show him what she had just read for herself

“he didn’t even kill anyone”,

she told the officer. They showed my a lot of love there because they felt sympathy for my plight.

They told me what to watch out for and to pretty much keep to myself. The same thing my mother had told me when I first got locked up at the down town Louisville jail where I was being held until the feds superseded and picked up my case.

While there I met this guy for New Jersey. He took a liking to me instantly. His name was Pete. A big dope boy from his city whom everyone at the hold-over respected. The officer’s had told him to watch out for me while I was there.
And he did.

He and I would sat and watch Venis and Serene Williams tennis matches back then and talk about the system. Then one day the officer told me that I was being designated to USP-ATLANTA. Pete was thrilled. Didn’t know why at first.

He told me that he had a friend there named Mutulu Shakur. And that he was a good dude to know. Boy was he right.

Mutulu was the best thing that ever happened to me…
Here’s why..( to be continued)
